Direct Housing Programs

Transitional Housing

AIDS Alabama's transitional housing programs provide temporary housing and supportive services to HIV-positive persons and families who are homeless or at-risk of becoming homeless.

The immediate goals are to provide stability to help people get back on their feet and to increase skills that will promote success in permanent housing placement.  These programs serve as a catalyst to help families rise above homelessness, find stability, and move toward independence.

Permanent Housing

AIDS Alabama's permanent housing programs offer a supportive living environment to formerly homeless persons living with HIV/AIDS who have moved out of transitional housing, but still require some support in order to maintain their stability.  Although called "permanent housing," the goal of these programs is to empower residents to eventually move into unsupported housing after they have increased their income and improved their levels of independence.

Unique Programs - Meeting Multiple Needs

AIDS Alabama operates several programs that are unique to the state of Alabama, including:

JASPER House

The only program in the state of its kind, JASPER House in Birmingham is a 14-unite residential care facility that serves low-income men and women living with HIV/AIDS and a severe mental illness. This program is certified by the Department of Mental Health and serves clients who are unable to live independently due to their dual HIV and mental illness diagnoses. The facility provides three, hot meals per day to residents, as well as 24-hour staff and medication supervision.

LIBCAP (Living In Balance Chemical Addiction Program)

LIBCAP is a three-stage, comprehensive program that provides housing, supportive services, and intensive outpatient substance abuse treatment to HIV-positive persons with chemical addiction issues. Clients served through the LIBCAP program are housed through our transitional programs. The program features structured activities and groups, with a focus on attaining and maintaining sobriety, stress management and problem solving skills, relapse prevention, and resources for life after treatment.
