AIDS Alabama provides a variety of HIV prevention education and outreach services in an effort to raise community awareness and prevent new HIV infections.

Did You Know?

  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that 25% of all HIV-positive persons do not know they are infected with HIV.
  • Four out of ten (40% of) Americans living with HIV/AIDS reside in the South.
  • Almost 1/3 of all Alabamians living with HIV/AIDS reside in Jefferson County.
  • African-Americans continue to bear the greatest burden of HIV infection.  While they make up 26% of the state's population, blacks account for 64% of new infections in the state.
  • The HIV diagnosis for African-American males is more than twice the rate of any other group.  Women are also markedly affected, as HIV/AIDS was the leading cause of death for black women ages 25-44 in 2006.
