AIDS Alabama provides a variety of housing programs to best serve the needs of our clients and community. Programs include emergency and supportive housing, homeless and rapid re-housing, permanent housing, permanent housing with enriched services, and long and short-term rent, mortgage, and utility assistance.

Alabama Rural AIDS Project (ARAP):
Located in rural Alabama counties, these single-family homes involve leases with third-parties and Tenant-based Rental Assistance (TBRA) vouchers. Tenants must receive supportive services from either AIDS Alabama or another AIDS service organization and fall into HUD low-income limits.

Permanent Housing:
Tenants have a lease agreement with AIDS Alabama, must fall into HUD low-income limits, and come with a referral from AIDS Alabama staff. There are 3 one-bedroom units available, and supportive services are optional.

Le Transclusive:
Le Transclusive can offer scatter-site housing options for up to 52 chronically homeless individuals with HIV and/or identifying as transgender. All referrals must go through One Roof.

1917 Temporary Housing:
Receives referrals only from UAB 1917 clinic. There is currently no cap on the number of referrals received.
JASPER House:
This housing option is open only to individuals who have a dual diagnosis of HIV/AIDS and a severe mental illness. It is a group home setting and certified by the Alabama Department of Mental Health. There are 14 one-bedroom units and 24-hour supervision with a licensed nurse practitioner on duty at all times. Tenants enter into a lease agreement with AIDS Alabama, must fall into HUD defined low-income limits, and accept day treatment and case management services.

The Way Station Emergency Shelter:
The Way Station Emergency Shelter (WSES) is here to provide a safe haven for unhoused young adults (19-29) and adults living with HIV. Our 20-bed, non-smoking overnight shelter offers not just a place to sleep, but also a hot meal, shower, laundry services, clothing options, and a grab-and-go breakfast upon discharge.
With 24-hour staff, case management, nightly security, and camera surveillance, WSES is committed to your safety and well-being. Plus, we document the history of homelessness to help expedite housing programs.

Rectory Shelter:
The Rectory is for homeless single adults who have a substance abuse diagnosis, and actively participating in our LIBCAP program.
Ascension/Rapid Rehousing:
Ascension/Rapid Rehousing can house up to 55 chronically homeless individuals or families age 19 or older. All referrals must go through One Roof Coordinated Entry.

The Way Station Transitional Housing:
The Way Station Transitional Program offers a lifeline to young adults (ages 18-24) experiencing homelessness. Upon referral through One Roof's Coordinated Entry process, clients receive secure, dorm-style housing with locked storage and an in-suite bathroom.
Our services go beyond just housing. We provide:
-Case management
-Transportation assistance
-GED program referrals
-24-hour on-site support

Permanent Housing
Permanent Housing II: are three one-bedroom apartments and two houses with more than one bedroom. Participants must have income and pay utilities. This program is designed for individuals and families with a qualifying HIV positive member living within HUD low-income limits.
Permanent Housing I: AIDS Alabama offers 18 one-bedroom units and 2 three-bedroom units, 3 two-bedroom units, and 7 one-bedroom units, both programs offer lease agreements to tenants who must fall into the HUD-defined very low-income limits, and offer the option of supportive services. Tenants must come with a referral from AIDS Alabama staff.
Permanent Supportive Housing
Le Transclusive is a Housing First, permanent supportive housing program designed for individuals experiencing chronic homelessness with HIV and/or identify as transgender. Participants must be assessed and referred by the Continuum of Care, One Roof (205) 254-8833. Permanent Supportive Housing offers assistance beyond the initial housing search and placement to assist clients with housing stability and maintenance. We believe that by offering supportive services such as counseling, assistance in accessing mainstream resources, legal assistance, mentoring, educational services, basic life skills training, and employment assistance, we offer clients tools needed to achieve personal growth and responsibility. Once housing and personal stability are achieved, the participants will have the tools to continue without assistance or transition to other subsidized or non-subsidized permanent housing. We offer this program to participants who meet the qualification regardless of HIV status.

Rapid Re-Housing
This program is a Housing First, rapid re-housing program that serves individuals and families coming directly from the streets or emergency shelters. Participants must be assessed and referred by the Continuum of Care, One Roof (205) 254-8833. Rapid Re-Housing offers the ability to quickly move clients into stable housing coupled with strong case management to increase income and access to mainstream benefits. We believe that by offering supportive services such as counseling, assistance in accessing mainstream resources, legal assistance, mentoring, educational services, basic life skills training, and employment assistance, we offer clients tools needed to achieve personal growth and responsibility. Once housing and personal stability are achieved, the participants will have the tools to continue without assistance or transition to other subsidized or non-subsidized permanent housing. We offer this program to participants who meet the qualification regardless of HIV status.
Rental Assistance
AIDS Alabama offers short-term emergency mortgage and rental assistance to individuals and families with a qualifying HIV positive member living within HUD low-income limits to help retain housing and who have a HUD-approved emergency.
AIDS Alabama also offers emergency housing assistance to individuals and families with a qualifying HIV positive member living within 300% of the Federal Poverty Level who have a qualified emergency. This assistance pays for emergency hotel costs pending permanent housing placement and some rents to help avoid homelessness.
AIDS Alabama offers on-going rental assistance based on tenant paying 30% of adjusted gross income. This service is available to individuals and families with a qualifying HIV positive member living within HUD low-income limits to help retain housing on a longer-term basis.
Rural Housing
AIDS Alabama’s Alabama Rural AIDS Project (ARAP) is permanent supportive housing operated by AIDS Alabama in rural areas for individuals and families with a qualifying HIV positive member living within HUD low-income limits.
Shelter Plus Care
AIDS Alabama’s Shelter Plus Care program houses individuals and families with a qualifying HIV positive member living within HUD low-income limits through the Jefferson County Housing Authority. Participants must be able to meet Jefferson County Housing Authority regulations, have no felony convictions, pass a credit check, show six months of negative drug screens, and stay in medical and case management compliance.
LGBTQ YOUTH HOUSING
Ascension Project: The Ascension Project is a Housing First, rapid re-housing program targeting youth 19–24 with an emphasis on those who self-identify as LGBTQ and meet the HUD homelessness definition. While Ascension Project has time limits on housing, we believe that by offering culturally appropriate supportive services such as counseling, assistance accessing mainstream resources, legal assistance, mentoring, parenting classes, educational services, basic life skills training, and employment assistance, we offer clients tools needed to achieve personal growth and responsibility. Once housing and personal stability is achieved, the participants will have the tools to continue without assistance or move into other HUD funded permanent housing. While individuals will be the focus, the program has allocated beds for households with children. Participants do not have to be HIV positive to qualify.
HOUSING CHRONICALLY HOMELESS
Our Rapid Re-Housing Program is a Housing First, rapid re-housing program that serves individuals and families coming directly from the streets or emergency shelter. Rapid Re-Housing offers the ability to quickly move clients into stable housing coupled with strong case management to increase income and access to mainstream benefits. AIDS Alabama believes that by offering supportive services such as counseling, assistance in accessing mainstream resources, legal assistance, mentoring, educational services, basic life skills training, and employment assistance, we offer clients tools needed to achieve personal growth and responsibility. Once housing and personal stability is achieved, the participants will have the tools to continue without assistance or transition to other subsidized or non-subsidized permanent housing. Participants do not have to be HIV positive to qualify.
